Great Fire of London Assembly

This script is based upon:

Unit 5 How do we know about the Great Fire of London?

The following points are covered in the script:

1.     Where and when it began? (Inclusion of Charles II, 3rd Stuart king; London today – Monument commemorating  the Great Fire)

2.     What happened? How it started?  Scale of fire.

3.     Why it raged for so long? (wooden houses, narrow streets, no fire brigade, effect of wind)

4.     How do we know what happened? (What is an eye witness? Part played by artists and such individuals as Samuel Pepys and Sir Christopher Wren)

Cast of 30

Duration: Around 10 - 15 minutes

If only..! Undoubtedly there would have been no Great Fire of London had the 17th century had our group of firefighters to hand! Their enthusiasm knows no bounds - as our unfortunate Narrator finds out to his cost!

Sample Text:

Londoner 5:    The fire lasted five days!

(Enter Fireman 3, pointing water hose at audience)

Fireman 3:      Fire? Did someone say ‘Fire’?

Narrator:         For the last time, wait for my signal!

(Narrator ‘frog-marches’ Fireman off stage)

Narrator:         Sorry, about that. So, how did the fire

(Narrator stops and glares at Fireman 4 who is about to charge onto stage, but stops in his tracks)

Narrator:         How did the fire last that long?

Londoner 6:    Have you never seen any pictures of what London was like in those days?

Narrator:         Can’t say that I have!

Londoner 7:    Well, let’s describe it to you then!

Londoner 8:    The streets of London were very different from today.

Londoner 9:    The houses were built very close together

Londoner 10:  In some places you could stretch across and shake hands with the people living opposite!

Londoner 1:    And the houses were made of wood.

Londoner 2:    And wood burns very easily.

Londoner 3:    There was also a strong wind

Londoner 4:    And no fire brigade to put it out.

(Narrator blows whistle)

(Everyone waits for the fire brigade to come on but nothing happens)
