Jawesome Jury

This play plus quiz on sharks is a judgement on man's part in endangering the natural balance in the sea's  ecosystem. 4 sharks versus 1 human, with a hammerhead shark as judge!

With its focus on the world's environment and the future of certain endangered wildlife species, this play could be used along with 'Our Planet' - an exploration of 5 habitats and man's impact on their wildlife - for IFAW Animal Action Week (Sept 28 - Oct 15) or World Habitat Day (Oct 5).

Sample Text:

Setting: Courtroom

Cast:      Hammerhead Shark (Judge)

                Human (The Accused)

                Great White shark

                Megamouth shark

                Whale shark

                Wobbegong shark

This play may be read by 6 speakers, or just 2. (For 2 speakers, Human has been emboldened, as one speaker; whilst the remaining 5 parts/sharks can be read by another speaker)

Reading time:  approx. 15 minutes (play), and at least 10 minutes for the quiz.

All sharks names are abbreviated in the script i.e. Hammerhead instead of Hammerhead shark

(Sharks encircling human, menacingly)

Great White:      (To human) We have you surrounded!

Human:                So I see!

Megamouth:     No escape, this time, Mister!

Human:                Are you threatening me?

Hammerhead:   (Banging head on table) Order! Order!  I will determine the human’s fate, not you!

Human:                Phew!

Wobbegong:      (Sulkily) So,  you’re letting him go?

Human:                Quite right!

Whale:                  But that’s not how we sharks normally operate!

Great White:      (To whale shark, dismissively) As if you’d know what to do, with a mouthful of human!

Hammerhead:   (Impatiently) May I remind you, Great White, that not all 370 plus species of shark want, or even need, to be awesome killing machines.

Whale:                  Some of us are more than happy simply letting our meals in, as we swim along!

Megamouth:     It’s quite an advantage, having a big mouth at times!

Human:                I can see where this one gets his name from!

Whale:                  It is a lot less hassle than having to go out hunting!

Human:                Ah! So you lot should be charged, along with me – if you’re hunting too.

Hammerhead:   Not so fast, human! You stand accused of greed and unnecessary waste. Us sharks hunt to survive. That is hardly the case with you.

Human:                But we have families to feed too! We do not just hunt for the fun of it!

Hammerhead:   (Skeptically) Oh really? But even if you were just ‘fishing for food’, how can you defend your ‘over-fishing’ ?

Wobbegong:      To the point where there are none of us left?

Great White:      Or so few, you have to do a quick U turn and put us on your ‘protected species’ list!

Hammerhead:   Could I suggest you should be finding out a bit more about us, before you endanger our futures, and your own?

Human:                Well, we are trying …

Megamouth:     That’s true enough! Taking your time though, aren’t you? Took you ‘til 1976 to discover me and only 4 more of my kind found since.

Whale:                  What kept you? Wasn’t his mouth big enough?!

Megamouth:     It hardly compares with yours – one gulp and a whole school of fish disappears!
