Let’s Meet Florence Nightingale
Allow just over five minutes reading time for both the script and quiz.
This is the second in a set of reading texts based on famous characters – past and present – available separately and (in time) as a collection of scripts.
The list will include monarchs, adventurers, poets, inventors, politicians, space explorers – all taken from the current primary school curriculum, with two objectives:
1. To Bring History Alive (as with my plays)
2. To make reading a more lively, interactive experience – for both child and teacher
The format I have used is that of a conversation/interview between two people. These two roles can be read either by and adult and child or two children; and they are interchangeable.
The activity could of course be extended by adding additional questions, as deemed appropriate to individual development and learning.
I am just starting out on this writing project so any suggestions from teachers reading this would be greatly appreciated.

Interviewer: You certainly were a light to those wounded soldiers at Scutari!
Florence: Well, I did my best to help them, in such terrible conditions!
Interviewer: In that terrible Crimean War.
Florence: All wars are terrible.
Interviewer: True. But you saved so many lives
Florence: With my team of nurses
Interviewer: Fantastic work!
Florence: Cleaning the beds, cleaning the floors
Interviewer: (Interrupting) But you were a nurse, not a cleaner!
Florence: No good nursing in dirty conditions.
