The Salem Witch Trials Lecture Synopsis
October 31st – Halloween: pumpkins, ghosts, trick or treat – all plain innocent fun? Not so if you were suspected of being a witch in the 17th century, especially if you lived within close proximity to certain bored teenagers in Salem, USA.
This lecture runs through the events of 1692 by the end of which nineteen people had been hanged, one pressed to death under stones, and four had died in jail. And for what? Simple answer: trumped up charges of witchcraft by a group of hysterical youngsters looking for a ‘little distraction’ from their bored Puritan lives. So much for justice.
A terrible episode in American history but one from which important lessons were learnt.
