A referee's job is never the easiest in the world - but put him in charge of 32 teams from across the world - all together, at the same time ..... Does he have his work cut out or does he have his work cut out?! Join him plus 32 nations in this celebration of the World Cup, covering volumes of World Cup facts - some well known, others .. well, do you know the real reason why the Brazilians lost that match against the Italians in 1938? Read on to find out!
Referee: We’ll see! And so to the winners of the 2006 tournament…
Italy: Italy! We were host country in 1934 when we won 2-1 against Czechoslovakia! We successfully defended our title the following World Cup in 1938, and hope to do well this year!
Referee: Hmm. They certainly have the passion. The Brazilians of Europe!
Italy: But we've had our upsets. Like not winning at home in 1990 and (pauses) not sure I should share this with you ...
Referee: Oh go on!
Italy: Well, our star player, Giuseppe Meazza, lost his shorts in a penalty shootout with Brazil!
Referee: (Incredulously) Lost his shorts? What do you mean?
Italy: They just .... fell down!
Referee: Lucky I wasn't on the pitch! I'd have sent him off! So, what did he do?
Italy: He just held them up ... and scored!
Referee: Hmm. No wonder Brazil didn't get through to the finals that year! What these players will do to win! Next!
Bosnia-Herzegovina: Our first time! Can’t wait
Referee: To play Brazil? You’ll have your work cut out if you play against them!
Referee: What a nation! They sure play a beautiful game!
Brazil: With beautiful players! Take Pele – voted Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999!
Referee: What an inspiration to us all!
Brazil: And Ronaldo! The highest scorer in World Cup history!
Referee: OK. So let’s hear a few more record statistics! You can’t get away from them when you’re talking about Brazil!
Brazil: Well, since you asked - we do hold the record for World Cup appearances which is 19; or 20 if you include this year, 2014 marking FIFA’s twentieth World Cup. We are the only country to have played in every World Cup! We have also won the most games – 67! And scored the greatest number of goals – 210! And then …
Referee: (Blowing whistle) Stop! Is there nothing you fall short on?
Brazil: Well, actually, yes. Although we have won the World Cup a record five times, we have never won at home. Roll on 2014 – maybe then!
(England fan leaps up again)
English Fan: Or maybe England!
Referee: (Blowing whistle and showing red card) That’s your last chance! One more peep and World Cup finals or no World Cup finals, you’re going home – for good! Next!
