Gunpowder Plot, Plague and Fire Lecture

Remember, Remember

The fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, guy, t’was his intent

To blow up king and parliament.

Three score barrels were laid below

To prove old England’s overthrow.

By God’s mercy he was catch’d

With a darkened lantern and burning match.

So, holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring.

Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?

Burn him!

Only they didn’t, of course! Those Roman Catholic conspirators suffered a far worse fate as re-told in this three part lecture, the first part being on The Gunpowder Plot, followed by coverage of two far more devastating episodes in London history - the Plague and the Great Fire of London.

The lecture starts with a brief summary of the Stuarts, looking at their family tree and its members – with the addition, of course, of one Oliver Cromwell; and concluded with photos of present day St. Paul’s Cathedral and surrounding area – plus a handful entitled ‘Spot Sue’s Son!’ – a collection of photos taken of today’s impressive fire fighters, one of whom … you’ve guessed – is one Eddie Russell, son of proud mother, alias lecturer, Sue Russell!
